At Connect Academy, we know that education is at its best when it’s personal, purposeful, and rooted in real experiences. That’s why we’re so proud to celebrate our very own Mr. Brandon Adjoumani. Brandon is not just a dedicated teacher for Connect Academy Main, but now a self-published author. His debut book,
Thirteen Layers, offers readers a deeply personal and powerful look into life as an individual with autism, and the journey of resilience, identity, and advocacy that has shaped his life and work.

In this Q&A, Brandon shares what inspired the book, how his unique storytelling structure came to life, and what he hopes others—especially young people and those in the autism community—take away from reading it.

Q: What inspired you to write this book, and how did your personal experiences shape the story you wanted to tell?
“Throughout my life as an individual with autism, I have faced challenges in areas many neurotypical individuals often take for granted—such as making friends and socializing. These experiences inspired me to share my story in a way that uplifts others who might face similar struggles. I also wanted the book to serve as a teaching tool for parents, educators, and anyone encountering individuals with autism, helping them foster greater understanding and empathy. Having experienced bullying throughout my childhood and even adulthood, I hope my story can create a world where others don’t have to endure those same hardships.”

Q: You mentioned your book is relatable and accessible—what do you hope readers, especially students or families in the autism community, take away from it?
“I want readers to better understand the nuanced struggles individuals with autism face—ones that aren’t always immediately visible. I hope they gain insight into how subjective challenges are; the size of a problem often depends entirely on the person experiencing it. To the autism community especially, I want to offer reassurance that they are not alone in their battles and that people like me are here to advocate for and support them.”

Q: Can you share a moment or chapter from the book that felt especially meaningful or powerful to write?
“My book isn’t structured by traditional chapters; instead, it’s divided into ‘layers,’ a concept reflected in the title. The three most impactful layers are the ‘Memory Layer,’ ‘Bottom Layer,’ and ‘Top Layer.’ The Memory Layer captures my ability to recall details of situations to an extreme degree, which is central to the narrative. The Bottom Layer delves into the moments when I feel at my lowest and the factors that bring me there—this is where I often find myself residing. Finally, the Top Layer focuses on the rare moments when I feel truly amazing, as if I’m on top of the world. Each layer holds profound meaning, encapsulating the highs and lows that define my journey.”

Q: What advice would you give to young people who might be going through similar experiences or thinking about telling their own story?
“You should never feel that you must face these struggles alone. Seeking help and building a strong support system is not only essential—it is something to be embraced without shame. There is immense strength in asking for the resources you need to thrive. I went from a high school student with a very low GPA to someone who is on the cusp of completing a doctorate program in 2026. Your story, too, can be a testament to resilience and growth.”

Q: What’s next for you—are you working on any new projects or hoping to share your story in other ways?
“My next big endeavor is expanding the mentoring program I’ve created, called Brandon’s School Age Mentoring. While not yet an official 501(c)(3) organization, this project is my heartfelt effort to help kids—both with and without disabilities—avoid the challenges I endured. I aim to ensure that every child feels cared for and valued. Beyond that, I may one day write another book to continue sharing my story.”
