Staff Spotlight: Kellie Krefft, Speech and Language Pathologist

At Connect Academy, our team is made up of dedicated professionals who go above and beyond to support our students. This month, we’re excited to highlight Kellie Krefft, a Speech and Language Pathologist who joined Connect Academy in June 2024. With 11 years of experience in student support services, Kellie brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for empowering students.

A Passion for Communication & Advocacy
Throughout her career, Kellie has worked in both public and therapeutic day schools. In recent years, she has developed a strong interest in the connection between mental health and communication. “I have taken a professional interest in the intersection of mental health and communication, with a focus on helping neurodivergent individuals feel empowered by their neurodivergence and better advocate for themselves in all types of settings.”

Building Meaningful Connections
For Kellie, forming relationships with students is the most rewarding part of her work. “I most enjoy the relationships I build with my students. To be a safe and inclusive person in their lives is truly special.”

A Flexible & Student-Centered Approach
Every day looks a little different in Kellie’s role, as she adapts her support based on what students need in the moment. “I try to take a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ approach to supporting students, meaning that I try to support them when and how they need it depending on the day or the situation. One day I might pull a student for a one-on-one session, another they might need me sitting next to them in the classroom.”

She also makes sure learning is engaging by incorporating students’ strengths and interests into every interaction. “I always lead my interactions with students with their strengths and interests, while infusing the lesson into an interaction they're enjoying.”

The Power of Collaboration
Kellie thrives in a collaborative environment and values learning from her colleagues. “Collaboration is my favorite thing! I always make a point to seek out people who are smarter than me, and who have different experiences and expertise to share.”

She believes the most effective therapy sessions happen when multiple perspectives come together. “My best therapy sessions are the ones where I can incorporate strategies I've learned from other types of professionals for a cohesive approach.”

Moments That Matter
Some of Kellie’s most meaningful experiences come when students actively seek her out, even outside of their scheduled sessions. “The most rewarding moments for me are when students ask to come see me, even on days when they're not scheduled to see me.”

Looking Ahead
This year, Kellie is focused on strengthening the connections she’s building with both students and colleagues. “My goal for this school year is to keep building those strong relationships with my students and coworkers!”
