At Connect Academy, growth doesn’t always happen at a desk. Sometimes, it happens on a cozy classroom carpet, with stuffed bumble bees and a pair of tiny antennae. Recently, one of our incredible therapists, Miss Sam, created a moment that perfectly reflects who we are and what we believe about student success.
A Lesson in Leadership and Belonging Miss Sam brought two of our older students into a younger classroom to lead a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) activity. The younger students gathered together on the carpet, each holding a small stuffed bee and wearing playful antenna headbands as the older students read a story about bees. It was sweet. It was joyful. It was engaging. But the real magic happened when the story ended. Where the Magic Happened Instead of simply closing the book and moving on, our older student leaders began asking thoughtful questions. They invited discussion. They encouraged reflection. They made real-life connections. What unfolded next was a beautiful, student-led conversation, one where younger students felt safe enough to share, confident enough to participate, and supported enough to connect their own experiences to the story. That moment embodied what student growth truly looks like. Learning You Can Feel To bring the lesson to life, Miss Sam introduced sensory trays filled with tactile materials so each student could create their own bee habitat. The hands-on activity allowed students to explore, create, and express themselves in a way that supported emotional regulation and creativity. Every child left that day with:
And if you asked the teachers? They would tell you they left feeling the very same way. Growth in Action One staff member reflected on one of her students, “She’s made so much growth.” Moments like this remind us that growth isn’t always measured by test scores or data points. It’s measured in confidence. In leadership. In connection. In the willingness of older students to step forward and guide others. At Connect Academy, student success is about more than academics, it’s about creating safe spaces where young people learn how to lead, connect, and belong. And sometimes, it starts with a little bee story on the carpet. Ready to Partner with Us?
